The world record of ‘smallest mammal’ has been achieved by Etruscan shrew (Suncus estruscus) from North America.

Also known as the Etruscan Pygmy shrew or the white toothed Pygmy shrew is the smallest known mammal by mass. It weighs only 1.2 to 2.7 g(about 1.8 grams on average) and considered as world’s smallest mammal. The Etruscan shrew has a body length of about 4 centimetres (1.6 in) excluding the tail. These shrews prefer warm and damp climates and are widely distributed in the belt between 10 degrees and 30 degrees N latitude stretching from Europe and North Africa up to Malaysia. It is also found in the Maltese islands, which is situated in the middle of the Mediterranean sea.
